Asbury Park Comicon 2013

I love going to the New York Comic Con so I thought it was time to branch out and try going to another con and I'm incredibly glad I did. I needed a pick me up after losing Sadie and this definitely helped as the Asbury Park Comicon was held at the beautiful and historic Asbury Park Convention Hall right on the boardwalk with a splendid view of the beach and ocean.

Although smaller than the ever growing New York Comic Con, the Asbury Park Comicon more than makes up for it with a beautiful location, great vendors and interesting panels held across the street at the Wonder Bar. I ended up picking up a few comics (new and vintage) and finally got the nerve up to ask for a sketch from one of the artists. I had a great time and hope to go again next year!

Asbury Park, NJ

Last Saturday I needed a lift and went to the Asbury Park Comicon along with a friend. Having never been to Asbury Park, NJ before I was blown away and went on a wee photo binge. Below are the results and oh how the beautiful day and warm sun complete with an ocean view boardwalk made me crave summer something fierce.

The Wheatsworth Mill

Built by Colonel Joseph Sharp in 1808 in Hamburg, New Jersey the "Old Mill" was originally owned and operated by the Uneeda Bakers who produced the whole wheat Uneeda Biscuit. The company was later purchased by the Wheatsworth Bakery company, which was again eventually purchased in 1898 by the ever growing National Biscuit Company who by that time was primarily running out of factories located in New York City. Over time the complex grew from just one stone mill to a small complex which also shared its property with the children's fun park, Gingerbread Castle.

However the National Biscuit Company consolidated their factories and moved their headquarters to East Hanover, New Jersey where they operate from today. After closing the factory doors for good, boarding up the windows a fire had gone through the main building in the early 1990's and gutted the factory. The main original "Old Mill" still sits out by the road next to the Wallkill River slowly rotting as another harsh winter is bound to hit and take another toll on the historic mill.
